Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery can correct the breast shape and is one of the most commonly performed procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery.Breast enhancement using implants can give women a more proportional body thereby tremendously improving self-esteem.

Ideal Candidates :

Patients having small breasts, Have lost a significant amount of weight that has caused your breasts to lose volume, Have lost your perky breasts after pregnancy and or breast feeding, Have breasts that are not proportional in size with your fuller lower body.

If your breasts are droopy you may need a breast lift along with the breast augmentation procedure to achieve best results. Breast augmentation can be performed starting age 18.

Advantages :

1. Increases self-confidence and femininity

2. Increases self-esteem

3. Achieve more symmetrical breasts

4. Increases ability to wear clothes and underwear of your choice

Procedure :

Breast augmentation surgery begins with an incision, made either in the crease of the breast, the armpit, or the perimeter of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). The placement of the incision will vary according to body type and the specifics of each breast enhancement procedure. The plastic surgeon then creates a pocket for the breast implant; either underneath the breast tissue or under the chest wall muscle.

Breast implants can be placed in either location, centred directly behind the nipple. Finally, the original incision is sutured. The beauty of Breast Augmentation is that you can see your initial result immediately after you finish your surgery. The scar from the incision takes from 12 to 18 months to fade.

The benefits of placing the implant under the muscle

A more natural look and feel Less risk of capsular contracture (implants becoming firm from scar tissue) A better mammogram image can be obtained The muscle can deter the drooping process because it ‘holds’ the implant in place, preventing some of the weighing down effect on the skin

At First Consultation :

At first consultation, the surgeon will evaluate your medical health and explain the surgical techniques available to you. During this evaluation the type, size and placement of implants most suitable for you will be decided upon. Implants are either round or teardrop in shape. I mostly use the round shape since it eliminates any risk of distortion if implants were to flip or rotate.

Teardrop shaped implants will have more weight on its lower part versus its upper part and hence are mainly used in reconstruction. Implants are either smooth or textured. I almost always use the textured implants since they allow better tissue adherence with the implant.

The incision is made either in the infra-mammary fold (breast crease), Trans axillary (armpit), Areola (the dark circle around the nipple), or TUBA / TransUmblical (belly button) and is decided depending on the type size and the placement of the implant. Implants are placed either sub glandular (beneath the gland) or sub muscular (beneath the muscle).I almost always use the sub muscular placement since the implant is totally covered by the muscle which hides the implant edges.

It also reduces the risk for capsular contracture (where the breasts form a hard capsule around the implant) and gives better mammogram readings. All these factors will be discussed prior to your surgery

Complications :

As with any surgical procedure, complications following breast augmentation, although rare, do exist. Capsular contracture (a tightening of the scar or capsule surrounding the breast implants) can occur following a breast augmentation procedure. If this happens, the plastic surgeon either “scores” the scar tissue, or removes the breast implant and re-inserts another.

Excessive bleeding and infection in the area surrounding the implants. Scars may be evident for several months, but they gradually fade. In some cases, the nipples may become hypersensitive or under-sensitive for a period after breast augmentation surgery

Inform us about any allergies, any serious medical condition(s), and all medications you aretaking.

Baseline blood investigations need to be done to assess physical fitness for surgery

Purchase a “post-op” bra (Sport bra) to support breasts prior and after surgery,

After surgery, pain is easily controlled by medication and usually will subside in a day or two.

The shower bath can be extended after removal of dressing

If dressings have been applied, they will be replaced by a surgical bra in a few days and asked to wear for 1 month all day and night
