What is Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, also referred to as “nose job,” “nose reshaping” or “nasal surgery,” involves the reconstruction and shaping of the bone and cartilage to enhance the nose and/or to improve the breathing through the nose.

Nose is an important aesthetic unit in the face. Any mild alterations in the shape of the nose can improve the facial profile of the individual. Rhinoplasty  surgery otherwise known as nose job aims in improving the appearance of the nose.

At First Consultation

During the initial consultation, you may be asked to look in a mirror and point out exactly what you would like to see improved. This will help the plastic surgeon to understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved. Patient should be enquired about history of nasal obstruction, past history of surgeries on the nose and history of injuries on the nose.

During evaluation our plastic surgeon will conduct a routine and painless examination of your internal nasal structures. Your skin quality as well as the size and shape of your nose and its relationship to your other facial features will be carefully studied. The overall goal is to produce an aesthetically enhanced, natural-looking nose that functions properly and is in balance and harmony with the patient’s facial features.

Rhinoplasty can be performed in two ways: open or closed. Open rhinoplasty requires an incision across the columella, and gives a surgeon easier access to the nasal tissue. During a closed procedure, all incisions are made within the nostrils. In the primary rhinoplasty procedure, an incision is created to separate the skin from the underlying bone and cartilage. After the skin has been lifted away, excess bone and/or cartilage is removed. In some cases, it may be necessary to add cartilage grafts to remodel the nasal structure. The surgeon then redrapes the skin to give the nose its new appearance. Depending on the needs of each patient, the change may be subtle or dramatic.

Instructions Before surgery

Tell your surgeon about all the medications you take on a regular basis.

If you smoke, quitting 2 weeks before your nose surgery is important. Smoking impedes your healing because it compromises blood flow to the skin. Drinking alcohol is also discouraged in the week or so before nose surgery.

You may need routine blood work and a physical exam before your nose surgery
